The case to go plastic

Home building is the largest consumer of America's forests using approximately 23% of the total.Wooden pallets are the second largest consumer of our forest products, using approximately 17% of the total.

A standard 40" X 48" wooden pallet weighs approximately 50 pounds (23 kilos) and contains approximately 25 board feet of lumber.

The wooden pallet has been the gold standard for transporting goods since the invention of the forklift in the early 1930's. Over one billion new wooden pallets are sold annually in the global pallet market.

In the United States alone, over five hundred million new wooden pallets annually enter the transportation cycle. Independent studies indicate about four hundred and fifteen million, or 84 percent, end up in landfills. Approximately 16 percent are recycled.

These studies indicate few wooden pallets are actually reused. These studies indicate lumber pallets, costing about $7-$8, are not suitable for reuse as they are designed to ship only one time to an end point. Additionally, the shipper is normally not concerned in getting the pallet back.
